NORTH END WOMEN’S CENTRE
On January 23, 2017 a few women from the St. George Ladies Auxiliary met with Cynthia Drebot, Executive Director of the North End Women’s Centre (NEWC), to present her with a donation from the proceeds of the Annual Christmas Luncheon. While there Cynthia gave an overview of the services provided at the NEWC as well as a tour
The NEWC is a non-profit organization that has been providing programs and services to women in Winnipeg since 1984. The many services to women include among other things:
Facilitating opportunities for women to connect with each other and other resources in the community; Educating and supporting women affected by violence in ways to help them keep safe, heal, and develop healthy relationships; Supporting women in reducing their use of addictive substances and educating them on healthier ways of coping; Assisting women in improving economic well-being and increasing their financial independence; Providing transitional housing and assisting in finding safe and stable housing; Providing women and children with skills to build a healthy parent-child relationship;
The NEWC relies on funding from grants and donations as well as profit from its Up Shoppe, a thrift shop that it runs. The shop also provides employment skills in local women that volunteer to work in it as well as free belongings to women under certain circumstances. Donations of clothing of all kinds including men and children are accepted as well as small household appliances.
Cynthia Drebot thanked the Ladies Auxiliary for such a generous donation and the ladies who attended were convinced that the money was well directed.
